Neighbourhood Watch NT are committed to helping to create safer and more secure Territory neighbourhoods.
In line with this mission, we have developed the Stop. Look. Lock. Campaign to educate Territorians on the simple measures they can take to help reduce opportunistic crime.
In 2021, 26% of home break-ins in the Northern Territory were into an unlocked or unsecured premise – Neighbourhood Watch NT and NT Police are working to reduce this number to zero!
The Campaign includes a set of videos, each encapsulating a different scenario, and demonstrates the ease in which crime can occur and highlights the preventable actions that could have been taken.
NHWNT have also created an accompanying informative brochure with detailed Home Safety, Personal Safety and Vehicle Safety tips.
Home Security
We recognise how easy it can be to become distracted and forget to lock up, but it is the simplest way to prevent opportunistic crime and protect yourself and your property.
Remember to Stop, take a moment to Look and check external doors and windows and Lock up before heading out or going to bed.
Vehicle Security
Did you know 7 out of 10 cars are stolen with their own keys?
Having a car stolen is stressful, inconvenient, and costly but it is often preventable. Remember to lock your vehicle doors and windows and avoid leaving your keys in or on your vehicle. Secure your car keys and never leave them or your garage/gate remote in your car, don’t put your name and address on any keys (instead use a phone number), and keep your spare keys in a secure place at home or at work and not in plain sight.
Property Security
When you go shopping, do you leave your bag in the trolley or pram?
We know it’s easy and convenient to do so, but it provides an easy opportunity for bag theft. Remember to take a moment to Stop, Look for the safest place to keep your belongings and ensure they aren’t left unattended and Lock and secure your bag.
Personal Safety
It’s easy to become distracted when we’re out and about, but being aware of your surroundings and knowing who and what is around you is vital to protecting your safety.
