HOLIDAY SAFETY
DON’T LET THIEVES STEAL YOUR CHRISTMAS
Tis the season to be vigilant. Whether you are staying at home or going away, check out our below tips to keep yourself, your home and your belongings safe this festive season.
Staying Safe Online
Only make online purchases from reputable and safe sites - you can identify a safe site by looking for a lock icon in the URL bar and a web address that starts with ‘https,’ not just ‘http.’
Be wary of scams, if something seems too good to be true it probably is. Check out scamwatch.gov.au for up-to-date info on current scams and reporting scams. If you fear you may have been scammed contact your bank and report it. If possible, use Paypal to shop online for added security.
Avoid oversharing on social media, particularly surrounding personal details and being away from your home.
Check your social media accounts and ensure your privacy settings are on.
A Safe Night Out is a Good Night Out
Plan your night ahead of time by taking your ID with you, organising a designated driver and letting your friends and family know wheCre you are headed.
If drinking alcohol ensure you eat beforehand, stay hydrated, know your limits and don’t leave your drink unattended.
Look after your friends by staying together, not letting them leave with someone they have just met and avoiding conflict situations.
Consider leaving a light or TV on in your home to give the appearance that someone is there.
Keep your handbag/wallet in sight and closed when not in use.
Keeping Gifts Safe
Avoid leaving gifts and valuables in your vehicle, if you must do so try to remove them from plain sight and park for prevention with your boot to a wall and park in well-lit and populated areas
Avoid having your Christmas tree and gifts set up in front of a window which is visible from the street
Don’t leave gift wrappers or boxes outside your premises - this shows what you have inside and may be a target for thieves
Bring a Little Joy
Christmas can be a lonely time for some - get in the Christmas spirit by checking in on your neighbours or introducing yourself if you haven’t done so. Our Hey There Neighbour card is an easy and non-confrontational way to introduce yourself.
Share the Christmas joy with those around you - a wave to your neighbour, a candy cane slipped into a letter box or a simple, “Merry Christmas,” could make someone’s day.
